Organize and Unite: The History of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance
Organize and Unite: The History of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance
This is short documentary about the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) and how it formed 20 years ago. Through archival footage, photos and interviews with founding members, the video examines the historical backdrop for forming the first national organization established for and by Asian Pacific American trade unionists. Founding members reflect on challenges they faced during APALA's beginning days from the mainstream labor institutions, as well as commemorate other workers of color who paved the way for a more inclusive labor movement. In the last 20 years, the organization has grown to be a strong voice for Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) in the workplace and a leading educator for young APA activists.
This version was shown at the 2013 Workers Unite! Labor Film Festival in New York.
City of Peace DC
City of Peace DC
This 12-minute documentary showcases City at Peace DC, an organization that uses the performing arts to teach diverse youth from the DC metropolitan area about social justice, and creates a space for youth to write, perform, and produce a musical based on their life experiences. I worked on this project in 2010 for my "Social Justice Documentary Video" class at Georgetown University as part of a four-person team consisting of a producer, writer, videographer and editor.
As the writer, I wrote pitches, researched the intersection of social justice and performing arts to create an overarching narrative, drafted a script, conducted interviews and developed "characters." I directed some of the editing and edited several sequences.
